On March 27, 2023, Dr. Chen Gang from the East Asian Institute at the National University of Singapore gave a lecture on "Disaster and Emergency Management in China". The lecture began with a historical survey of disasters in China, then moved on to analyze traditional, modern, and contemporary China. The bulk of the presentation focused on the contemporary period after the opening up and reforms in China, highlighting the structural and institutional changes in the state apparatus for dealing with disasters and emergencies, as well as established norms and the evolution of operational codes. The lecture concluded by discussing major problems and challenges facing China in handling disasters and emergencies.
